About Reading Farm

LEVEL STRUCTURE

For each level, YBM Reading Farm provides the corresponding U.S. Grade year,

as well as a GRL (Guided Reading Level or Fountas & Pinnell Level). With carefully selected books,

students can get extensive reading at the appropriate level.

YBM Reading Farm consists of a thousand books spread throughout a total of 10 levels,

and provides not only grade level and GRL, but also reading indexes including DRA, and Reading Recovery Level.

Can understand very short, simple texts a single phrase at a time, picking up familiar names, words and basic phrases and rereading as required.

Pictures make it easier and more fun to understand the story.

Each page has 1~2 lines of text and covers themes that are familiar to children.

Text consists of simple sentence structures and concise repeating patterns.

Lv 2 A2 C~F K~1

Can understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language.

Can understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.

The length and number of words and sentences increase, and dialogue using punctuation marks is often used.

Illustrations help recognize and understand the story.

Stories use high-frequency words used in everyday life.

Lv 3 A2 G~I 1

Can understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language.

Can understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.

Formal written language patterns are used.

Lv 4 B1 J~K/ L 1~2

Can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interest with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

The text contains a variety of dialogue styles.

New words with 3~4 syllables, adjectives, and adverbs are introduced.

Lv 5 B1 M 2

Can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interest with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

Books include illustrated historical novels, myths, and fables, which are easy to understand even without background knowledge.

The number of pages increases, and multisyllabic words and technical terms start to appear.

Lv 6 B2 N/ O 2~3

Can read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes, and using appropriate reference sources selectively. Has a broad active reading vocabulary, but may experience some difficulty with low-frequency idioms.

The ability to understand a wide range of genres and new vocabulary is improved.

More diverse outlines stimulate curiosity and the personalities of different characters can be understood.

Lv 7 B2 P 3~4

Can read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes, and using appropriate reference sources selectively. Has a broad active reading vocabulary, but may experience some difficulty with low-frequency idioms.

Essential background knowledge in a variety of fields including history and science is expanded.

Can understand in detail lengthy, complex texts, whether or not they relate to his/her own area of specialty, provided he/she can reread difficult sections.

Texts that include concise and complex metaphorical expressions and figures of speech that require special background knowledge can be understood.

Informational texts on a variety of topics, biographies, and coming of age novels are included.

Lv 9 C1 T~V 5

Can understand in detail lengthy, complex texts, whether or not they relate to his/her own area of specialty, provided he/she can reread difficult sections.

A variety of genres including historical fiction and biographies are covered.

An understanding of politics and history is reached.

Lv 10 C2 W~Y 5~6

Can understand and interpret critically virtually all forms of the written language including abstract, structurally complex, or highly colloquial literary and non-literary writings.

Can understand a wide range of long and complex texts, appreciating subtle distinctions of style and implicit as well as explicit meaning.

Topics including social studies and science or multidimensional themes are covered, and technical terminology can be learned.

All types of text including fiction and nonfiction can be understood.
